El Lunes 10 de Febrero se celebró la primera jornada de la Exposición de Westminster en su 138 edición ininterrumpida desde que en 1877 se celebrase la primera edición, en el Hipódromo neoyorkino de Gilmore’s Garden con una inscripción total de 1,201 ejemplares.
Esta antigüedad, así como el hecho de que no haya dejado de celebrarse nunca, ni tan siquiera durante los duros años de la Gran Depresión o durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, hacen que la Exposición del Westminster Kennel Club sea el segundo acontecimiento deportivo más antiguo del mundo, sólo superado por el Derby de Kentucky, la carrera de caballos más famosa del mundo y que se celebra desde dos años antes, 1875.
Todo esto da idea de la importancia de una muestra canina que es mucho más que eso. Westminster es un icono para todos los aficionados a los perros del mundo y cada vez son más, especialmente desde la popularización de internet, los que cada año se sientan delante de sus ordenadores, tablets o Smart TV, para ver los juicios de sus razas favoritas o trasnochar mirando los Grupos y el espectacular BIS.
La gran decepción
De momento, este año nos hemos visto sumergidos en una gran decepción a nivel mundial debido a la imposibilidad de ver los Grupos del primer día dado que este año el Westminster Kennel Club ha vendido los derechos de transmisión a la cadena de pago CNBC, cuya señal sólo puede verse en los Estados Unidos o a través de algunos proveedores de cable. Nos ha sido imposible encontrar ningún tipo de señal online para poder seguir los juicios y, visto lo visto, no somos los únicos, ya que los perfiles sociales del WKC se han visto inundados de mensajes de protesta y búsqueda de explicaciones. Además, sea quien sea el encargado de gestionar la política de Social Media del WKC, su actuación ha sido nefasta, no sabiendo gestionar una crisi de reputación como ésta y llegando, en alguna ocasión, a faltar al respeto a sus interlocutores, tratando de hacerles callar y permanecer quietos como si se tratase de perros en adiestramiento.
A lo largo del día de hoy, y mientras podemos disfrutar, aquí si, de los juicios de razas en directo, intentaremos encontrar, si es posible, la manera de hacerles llegar algún tipo de enlace para poder ver las finales de esta noche.
Westminster es patrimonio de la cinofilia mundial y flaco favor se están haciendo a si mismos los caballeros del WKC cerrando la puerta en las narices de los aficionados de todo el mundo y de una buena parte de los propios norteamericanos.
